We arrived safely yesterday. However by the time we settled into the hotel it was after 4pm so we decided to rest and peruse the map marking our must see stops. We are staying at the Beau site Hotel about a 25 minute walk from the city center. Nice hotel. We have our own room with bathtub!
They handed us a map as we checked in and marked where we are and where the bus station is, very useful info! I asked for local restaurant suggestions and 20 minutes later I felt much more confident about Belgian cuisine
She reports that Belgian cuisine is much like French but better. Belgians still have the presentation but they use a little bit more butter and cream. I must say I ordered a chicken in mushroom cream sauce that was so amazing. The mushroom were cut into slivers and drapped over the chicken cutlets. The sauce was so buttery delicious I almost licked my plate clean.
Belgian waffles - this is not a breakfast food or even a dessert it is street food. You find them in food trucks. Restaurants also sell them she said look for Belgaufra for the best and freshest!
There are two styles of Belgian waffles. Brussels - deeper holes, square edges, light and fluffy.
Leige or Luikse are more rough rounded edges, thick and sticky, more bread like.
She also warned us that most places they are not fresh only Belgaufra is guaranteed fresh. I did have a Liege waffle with chocolate I don't know if it was Belgaufra or not it was tasty though.
French fries/frites - served in a paper cone with a tiny fork and little built in cup for the sauce. Not a lot of grease and I agree they are the best French fries I've ever had. The oil used to fry them is excellent the outside I crispy and inside is a warm soft tastiness. In Bruges I have a frites museum to explore and learn more from!
Tripe is served in some places and cones in many forms. It is pretty much a term to mean organ meat. I thought it was more like chitterlings. I still don't plan to go out of my way to find any.
Lambic style beer when made traditionally is very dry and sour closer to wine. Modern Lambics are made with lesser ingredients and are much sweeter. I prefer the more modern Lambics the sweet balances the sour so well. The traditional one was just so dry made me want water, the sour part was fine for me.
Chocolate - I partook in son but I can't tell you what makes It good.
We have taken photos I am waiting for them to download to my phone. We saw tons today!!
