Belgium Bruges -

Another touristy Bruges outing - climb 366 steps up to the top of the Belfry tower.

Only 70 people allowed to go up at a time. So you get to wait in line. There was a guy peddling custom made silhouettes he picked people in line and cut out a silhoutte of them in profile and the try to get them to buy it. He chose Bastian and totally nailed him glasses, pony tail, beard quite good but we didn't get it. It was nice but I didn't like that he didn't eve ask first just did it and was like "buy it". Bastian doesn't like photos and then begging for money later even worse. The guy has talent though.

We finally got in and started the climb. At first it was easy a wide staircase stone steps. Slowly they narrowed and became more like the Blarney castle steps. Until they became wooden, narrow, and steep the handhold a rope and traffic going both up and down. Quite the calf workout!

There were occasional stopping levels. For Brea and a history lesson. Or to see the bells as you got higher.

At the top the view was spectacular! Made the hard work worthwhile.

Great place to relax and admire the view until the bells go off. They have Carrillon bells that play slightly off tune every hour. You can hear it for miles.

  1. I'd kind of like to see a graph of regret vs. stair number in that tower. I imagine it drops to zero once you reach the top and see the view, but...
