This is the only Bruges beer still brewed in Bruges. Originally started in 1856 it was named after the owner - Henri Maes (pronounced mass) but someone else started brewing under the name Maes so they changed to De Halve Maan to avoid confusion.
The tour was more museum than brewing as they have a lot of old equipment and bottles.
Today they are very popular local and are expanding. They do export to America. On of their newer brews is the Brugge Zot line (zot means joker/jester which I the mascot for the brew). It has a nice flavor but be careful the alcohol content I about 6%.
